Perfect guide: how to tie a bow tie ?

Three or four months ago, I loved wearing bow ties. It certainly happened to me a bit, but that does not stop me from finding people who really wear them.

Especially today, there is a huge choice in the market. Many brands have embarked on the adventure of the bowtie but I will come back, we will see that at the end of the article.

I know that for some, it’s a hard-to-wear accessory, which can quickly make too much or a waiter.

When I wore it, I remember people looking at me strangely. In their head, they had to think like ” but he cracked him with his bow tie “. Regardless, I continued to incorporate into my looks and appreciate that!

Do not worry, I am here to prove that you can wear the “bow tie” without doing too much, having fun.

How to tie a bow tie , FROM A TO Z

We are at the beginning of the 19th century. Fashion is at the white tie and fine linen. The first appearances of the bow tie  come first of all from the tie knot.

The followers wore their tie several times around the neck and knotted it on the front, without the tails falling on the shirt.

Beau Brummell, a fashion designer at the court of George IV and one of the spiritual fathers of dandyism, proudly displayed this symbol of English elegance.

It is in France that this knot would have become a butterfly. It would have been named after Puccini, following the success of ” Madame Butterfly ” in 1904.

The golden age of the bow tie follows. From Winston Churchill to James Bond, or in street fashion, it is worn by all, especially in recent years when it arouses new interest.

There are different types. None is more appropriate for this or that occasion: here, everything is really a question of taste.

The only thing you need to pay attention to, which is a rule in itself, is the width of the knot. If you do not want to be ridiculous, make sure that it does not exceed the width of the face.

The more sturdy you are, the more you’ll be able to have a generously sized bow tie.

There are mainly three:

  • Nodes mounted and sewn:

They cannot be undone and are convenient to use but less aesthetic. We find mainly this type of node at the entry level.

  • Stitched knots:

Two fasteners allow you to clip it. They are often pre-tied but can be undone if needed.

  • Ties to tie oneself:

They can be adjustable or fixed neck size (like shirts). They are rather widespread in the high-end sector, they give off a certain authenticity.

The different forms of bow ties

Yes, a bow tie cannot be worn with any shirt collar!

The French collar is the type of collar that you need, I think, mostly to have in your personal collection. This is the reference collar to wear your bow tie safely. It is suitable for all sizes: slim, normal and wide.

The narrow collar is less common in the men’s locker room. Most of the time, it is worn with a slim bowtie.

The collar club (which corresponds more or less to the collar “Claudine” in women), can bring an original touch to your outfit. I recommend you wear a slim knot or normal size, not to hide the rounded that makes the interest of this collar.

The stylistic effect is top, I guarantee it!

The broken collar is used for shirts worn with a tuxedo. If you want to emphasize the elegance of your outfit and put yourself on your 31 (for holidays for example), choose a bowtie small or normal size.

Feel free to choose a patterned bow to bring a quirky and original side!

Once the shirt is chosen according to the bowtie, you will have yours to tie. Let’s see it together!

For this part, an effective image is worth all the explanations of the world.

It’s no more complicated than a tie!

Since we are talking about an accessory, the goal here is not to take the lead but to have fun.

How to wear it in a stylish way without doing too much?

The only rule to follow is to always wear it with a shirt . Of course, staying vigilant about the size of collar compared to the bowtie: neither too small nor too big.

Although it is traditionally worn with a suit, you can easily distract it! I advise for example to wear it with jeans and a pair of sneakers, it’s offbeat but it works well. Of course, you can also opt for shoes for a little more dandy look.

The bowtie is also worn with a V-neck sweater, a cardigan, a blazer … In short, it’s much easier to wear than you think: you can quite integrate from time to time to your outfits while respecting the style of your own.

For example, it is a very good accessory to enhance a look composed of good basics, to give it an original touch without falling into the ostentatious.

On the other hand, there are a few things to avoid in order not to overdo it.

First, I think that you should avoid wearing it with a suit vest like a butler, venturing there can be dangerous. Similarly, some looks mixing bow tie + braces are sometimes successful, but it seems to be quite rare. The association between the two is a bit too much in my opinion.

In terms of color and patterns, however, I see no limit! On the contrary, it is the possibility of expressing one’s personality that makes the piece interesting.

The only advice I could give you if you opt for a yellow bow with green polka dots: choose a more sober shirt  (white poplin or chambray for example).

Here, for example, the knot comes out well thanks to the choice of the white shirt. If it had been patterned, it would have been too much.

For the most skeptical of you, opt for something discreet like a tone on tone, or the classic black bow tie at first. Once used to this accessory, do not hesitate to play on colors and patterns, for a more personal side.

A black bow tie is really easy, it’s the easiest to start in my opinion.

Here, the outfit is relatively busy but works well. The bright red is toned down by the navy blue. The shirt being stripped, we choose a plain knot. And finally, the brown echoes the cover.

I really like the material between the jacket and the bow tie, both being tempered by the smooth shirt with discrete checks.

Last example, rather original. Combine three patterns (houndstooth, chevrons, and camo) is very risky but it finally gives a look really stylish!

It exists at all prices, from 10 euros to a hundred. As you can see, the price varies depending on the chosen material, the quality of manufacture and the possibility of customization (custom-made).

Also, note that thrift stores that abound on the Hexagon are also a great way to find bow ties. I have already found for only a few euros.

We now go to the selection of brands to find his beautiful bow tie. 😉

The brand offers a wide variety of knots, the design is correct and the price very affordable: they are all offered at a single price of 20 euros.

I particularly like their knit patterns.

The Flageolet  is a young brand that makes bow ties in a traditional way. There is something for all tastes and colors, in a multitude of materials (toile de jouy, velvet, denim …).

Count on average 50 euros for these accessories to tie oneself.

The tailor-made is also available for special occasions.

This brand offers a wide variety of models, with designs that are truly original and elegant at the same time! The design is good for a price again very affordable. Count around thirty euros.

A very good brand for everything that is ties and bow ties. You will find classic and other more colorful models for 49 euros!

I also wanted to introduce a Parisian designer specializing in the bow tie:  Laurent Desgrange. I appreciate it for its originality, its somewhat “crazy” side and the mastery of a French know-how (workshop located in Paris).

In my opinion, it’s a bit of a troublemaker’s troublemaker.

To wear this type of original and colorful bow, sober suit and white shirt are de rigueur.

Let’s look now at Forage. This American brand, which has existed since 2000, uses antique materials. That’s why a certain character emerges from their lot of butterfly knots.

Wear with a preferably plain shirt, to avoid overloading patterns. Between 30 and 55 euros.

All the knots are handmade.

Last step of our selection, with the Cinabre brand. The finishes are handmade in France and all the knots are doubled.

Denim and cotton pique model.

In addition, your name can be affixed to the product with a hand-marked label. Its price of 85 euros is certainly expensive, but there is really a big work behind.

Beyond prejudices, the bow tie is an accessory much simpler to master than one might think.

Available in a multitude of colors, patterns, and materials, there is something for everyone. The offer has diversified in recent years and, in general, a brand known for the quality of its ties will usually be also for its bow ties. This is the case of Howard’s, for example.

The holidays are the perfect opportunity to try it. Feel free to send us your feedback, by comment or photo!
